But I Have to Cheat ... I'm Not Good Enough by Steve Ridgell
Every time I open my sports page I get to read another article dealing with steroid abuse. Why do they do it? They know it is dangerous, they know it is cheating, and they know the consequences if they get caught. I do not claim to be an expert, but it seems to me that the bottom line is that they are convinced that taking steroids enables them to compete at a higher level than they otherwise could. In the highly competitive world of sports, it gives them the edge to compete. Perhaps they don't think they are good enough on their own, or perhaps they believe everyone else is a user, or they want to achieve even more than they can in their present state.
Is that why people cheat in academics, in their financial dealings, and even in their relationships? It's not just in sports. People lie on their resumes because they don't believe the truth is good enough. Academic fraud occurs when your best is not good enough. It even happens in relationships when someone thinks they are not good enough; they cheat.
I can never be good enough.
That's why Christianity is so different. It is the only life I know that is based on the fact that not one of us is good enough. In fact, that is the cause of celebration for the Christian. Not only am I not good enough to save myself ... but I can never be good enough. There is not even a way to cheat enough to save myself. And that's the whole point. God loves me anyway. He let his Son die so that I could go to heaven. And not because of anything I have done, but in spite of everything I have done.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Here is the good news: I don't have to be good enough for God. He loved me enough to let His Son die for me even though I was a sinner.
