Removing the Selfish Part of Me
by Paul Faulkner
You can see the speck in your friend's eye, but you don't notice the log in your own eye. How can you say, "My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye," when you don't see the log in your own eye? You're nothing but show-offs! First, take the log out of your own eye. Then you can see how to take the speck out of your friend's eye (Matthew 7:3-5 CEV). Selfishness is usually what destroys a home. It's like termites eating away from the inside! For a permanent cure to this problem, we have to do an internal self-examination and eradicate the selfishness eating away at what we are trying to build. We have to get the selfish part of ourselves out of the way, so we can grow ... grow toward God and grow together as a family.
There's no problem too big to overcome in a family if a foundation of self-examination and personal integrity is "bedrock" with Mom and Dad. Selfishness, however, will eat away at the soul of family and destroy it. You see, builders can make an unstable house look pretty for a while, but eventually a house without a solid foundation and strong framework will eventually fall. Choose self-examination over selfishness! It'll make life work a lot better for you and your family, today. Instead of taking a peek to admire yourself in the mirror, look down into your soul. Examine your heart and your motives, and refuse the path of selfishness and commit to be God's person in your family today.
